How is maple syrup made? We will look at the parts of a maple tree and find out how to tap a tree, and how the sap flows. Take a look at the supplies we use to tap trees, and have a taste test at the end to see if you can tell the difference between real and fake maple syrup!

Sunset in the Clouds: Guided Hike up Mount Roberts March 16th

Wednesday 5:00-9:00pm | Squam Lakes Association534 US Rte 3, Holderness

Join the Squam Lakes Association (SLA) for a guided hike of Mt. Roberts on Wednesday, March 16th from 5pm-9pm! LRCC guide Paul will lead a group on the 2.5 mile ascent to the summit of Mt. Roberts with a stop at the top, and then part of the way back down before settling at a site along the trail with a picturesque, west-facing vista to appreciate what will hopefully be a gorgeous sunset over the Lakes Region. After, the group will don their headlamps make their way back to the parking lot. Be prepared for a strenuous hike as this trip will cover a distance of about 5 miles round trip, and has an elevation gain of 1,362’. Hiking trails at Castle in the Clouds are maintained through the continuing conservation and stewardship efforts of the Lakes Region Conservation Trust. 

This is considered a strenuous hike, recommended for those with significant hiking experience. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Experience a New England tradition that predates New England—making maple syrup! From tapping a tree to tasting delicious maple syrup, you will take an inside look into every step of the syrup making process. Our naturalists will help you identify maple trees, learn the parts of the tree and their functions, find a tree to tap, learn the history of maple sugaring, and enjoy the sweet aroma of boiling sap.

Wild Winter Walk at Squam Lakes Natural Science Center March 19th

Saturday 10:00-11:30am | Squam Lake Science Center | 23 Science Center Rd, Holderness

Squam Lakes Natural Science Center offers a winter program for adults and families with children ages 6 and up. Learn about the animals who live at the Science Center during the winter. Most of them stay in the same place, just as they would in the wild. A staff naturalist will lead a guided walk on the live animal exhibit trail to see the animal ambassadors dressed in their winter coats and discuss how these native animals are well adapted for winter in New Hampshire. If needed, snowshoes are available at no extra cost or participants can bring their own. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This program is all outdoors. Dress to be outdoors with insulated snow boots, hats, gloves, and warm layers. Pre-registration is required for all programs at www.nhnature.org.

Cost: $9/member; $11/non-member
