Bundle up and explore the wonders of winter wildlife on a guided Wild Winter Walk led by knowledgeable naturalists. Stroll along the live animal exhibit trail and observe animal ambassadors as they show off their winter coats and survival strategies.

• How animals stay warm, find food, and survive winter conditions

• Close-up views of live animal ambassadors

• Fascinating insights from expert naturalists

• Children must be accompanied by a registered adult

One of New Hampshire’s most unique winter traditions is back! The Alton Bay Ice Runway (Runway 01/19) officially kicked off the 2026 season on January 31 with 82 aircraft landings on opening day alone — including pilots traveling from as far as Rhode Island and Pennsylvania.

Located on the frozen surface of Lake Winnipesaukee, this remarkable 2,600-foot-long, 100-foot-wide runway is carefully maintained by the NH Department of Transportation and operates only when ice thickness exceeds 20 inches for safety. Both ski-equipped and conventional aircraft are welcome.

✨ What to Know:
• Typically operates late January through March (weather dependent)
• Season length varies (usually 4–8 weeks)
• Day-to-day operations based on ice and temperature conditions
• One of the busiest “airports” in the state on peak winter weekends
• Up to 130+ plane landings in a single day during ideal conditions

This iconic winter aviation experience draws pilots and spectators alike for an unforgettable sight — planes landing and taking off directly from the ice!
